Bookkeeper vs. CPA: Which Does Your Small Business Need?

They are not competing options. One keeps the record of what happened; the other uses that record to file and advise. Problems start when the first job is skipped.

Small business owners often ask whether they should hire a bookkeeper or a CPA. In practice the two roles sit at different points in the same process, and the answer for most businesses is that they need both — just not the same amount of each.

What a bookkeeper does

  • Categorizes income and expenses month by month
  • Reconciles bank and credit card accounts to the statements
  • Maintains the chart of accounts
  • Produces Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports
  • Cleans up and catches up books that have fallen behind

What a CPA or tax preparer does

  • Prepares and files business and personal tax returns
  • Advises on entity structure and tax strategy
  • Represents you in front of taxing authorities
  • Performs audits, reviews, and attestation work

Why the order matters

A tax professional works from your books. If the books are unreconciled, the return is built on numbers nobody has verified — and the cost of sorting that out during filing season is almost always higher than keeping the books current through the year.

What Supernova does and does not do

Supernova Bookkeeping Solutions LLC is a bookkeeping company. We handle monthly bookkeeping, cleanup and catch-up, reconciliation, chart of accounts organization, and financial reporting. We are not a CPA firm and we do not prepare tax returns or provide tax, legal, or financial advisory services. We prepare organized books and hand them to your tax professional.

Frequently asked questions

Can a bookkeeper file my taxes?
No. Filing tax returns is the role of a CPA or another qualified tax preparer. A bookkeeper prepares the accurate records the return is built from.
Do I still need a bookkeeper if my CPA does year-end work?
Usually yes. Year-end work is not the same as monthly reconciliation, and owners who only see numbers in April lose the ability to make decisions during the year.
Can you work directly with my CPA?
Yes. Most of our clients have their own tax professional, and we provide the reports and supporting detail requested at filing time.
